ART OF THE BRAIN TO HOLD ITS 8TH ANNUAL GALA,

“AN INSPIRATIONAL GLOBAL PURSUIT FOR A CURE”

Dr. Richard M. Green and Marlene and David Capell to be Honored

LOS ANGELES - - The UCLA Neuro-Oncology Program’s Art of the Brain (AOB) will hold its 8th Annual Gala “An Inspirational Global Pursuit for a Cure . . . Ready Set, Go Green for the Mind and Music,” on Saturday, October 6, 2007.  The event will take place at UCLA’s Schoenberg Hall at 7:00 p.m.  Jason Barry, a reporter with KPHO-TV, CBS 5 in Phoenix, Arizona, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.  His father, Alan Barry, died several years ago of brain cancer.

The Gala will feature a special presentation by String Theory Productions called “Lyrical Inspiration,” which will spotlight the talent, courage and strength of brain cancer survivors who, with their caregivers, will join with the musicians in performance.  Revolutionizing traditional performance, String Theory Productions transforms architecture and other structures into giant playable harps.  Each installation is designed specifically for the individual performance space and is accompanied by cello, violin, walls of percussion called Cyclodrums, and other instruments and electronic devices.  Musician Kevin Carlberg, a brain cancer survivor, will collaborate with the group.  Formerly a member of the jam rock group Pseudopod, Carlberg is now performing as a solo artist.

“This is an opportunity to show our solidarity with the courageous men and women living with brain cancer and to pay tribute to the unforgettable individuals we have sadly lost,” says Art of the Brain Founder Judi Kaufman.  “As a brain cancer survivor, I understand the importance of using creativity to regain self worth and personal power.’

The Johnny Mercer Foundation Research Award will be given to Dr. Richard M. Green, Director of Neuro-Oncology at Kaiser Permanente Southern California, for his dedication to his patients and contributions to clinical brain cancer research.

Marlene and David Capell will be honored with the Judi Kaufman Founder’s Responsibility Award for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to philanthropic activities benefiting brain cancer research and treatments.

“We are very proud to be honoring these extraordinary people,” says Dr. Timothy Cloughesy, director of the UCLA Neuro-Oncology program and Art of the Brain president.  “Each of them has worked tirelessly to do everything possible to find a cure for brain cancer.  We are pleased to be given this opportunity to express our gratitude.”

The evening will also include a raffle and a special version of “Wheel of Fortune” that includes gifts and prizes donated by brain cancer survivors, their friends and families.

The Art of the Brain 8th Annual Gala is chaired by Judi Kaufman. Tickets are $300 each, if purchased by September 1st, and $325 each, if purchased after that.  For more information call 310-825-5074 or visit www.artofthebrain.org.
